Wilpena Pound — detail from the Natural Time Warp Wheel

Wilpena Pound is a natural amphitheatre of folded Ediacaran-period sedimentary rock in the Flinders Ranges of South Australia, among the oldest exposed landforms on the continent and a site of deep significance in Adnyamathanha tradition.

Rock does not need to be watched to keep its shape. The folded strata that ring Wilpena Pound were pressed into their curve hundreds of millions of years before anyone stood inside the amphitheatre to notice it, and the fold has held regardless — a form taken under pressure that does not require repetition to still be there.
