The world’s largest coral ring, holding an ocean of its own inside it.
Kwajalein is the largest atoll on Earth by lagoon area — a slender ring of some ninety-odd islets enclosing more than eight hundred square miles of turquoise water in the central Pacific, part of the Ralik Chain of the Marshall Islands. Its lagoon is deep enough, and calm enough, that it has served since the Cold War as the splashdown zone for the U.S. Army’s Reagan Test Site, tracking intercontinental missile re-entries from an atoll most of the world has never heard of.
That double life — ancient coral ring and modern ballistic proving ground, sharing the same enclosed water — sits at the far eastern reach of the Wheel’s eleven Areas, nearly a third of the way around the planet from Giza.
