A volcanic archipelago astride the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, sometimes named for what it might once have been.
The nine islands of the Azores rise from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge itself, the seam where the Eurasian and North American plates are slowly pulling apart — making this Portuguese archipelago one of the very few places on Earth where that boundary breaks the ocean’s surface. Volcanic craters, some now crater lakes in green calderas, sit within a day’s walk of black-sand coastline.
The islands’ mid-ocean position, astride a active rift, has long attracted speculation in esoteric literature as a possible remnant of Atlantis; Book I registers the Azores as a geographic control point only, without adjudicating that older claim.
